Makerere-KIU in a ‘tit for tat’ encounter

In a matchplayed on Thursday September 20, Makerere University and KIU shared the spoils in basketball and Volleyball as KIU rose to the occasion in football.

Makerere ladies were humbled by KIU 28-43--and Makerere men convincingly overpowered KIU with 55-46.

Makerere ladies volleyball team fought a tight game against KIU to win 2-0 with the second set closely competed for. It was never all done as KIU men volleyball team sweetly revenged the ladies loss after winning a decider against Makerere with 2-1. KIU had an edge of celebration for the day after winning 1-0 against Makerere in football.

After a fairly calm first half with a few clear opportunities, KIU clearly killed the game off in second half with a decisive pass to Adune Moses which gave him a one to one opportunity with the Makerere Keeper. He dribbled thekeeper and tacked the lone winning goal into the net.

Scares arose of a devastating injury after excessive contact of Adune and the keeper in the process of scoring but he later recovered. The goal was scored just a few minutes to the final whistle and disorganized the attacking prowessof Makerere to the end.

In the ladies volleyball, MAK won KIU by 2-0with straight sets of25-22, 25-27 in the first and second set of the game.

MAK’s Pajije Sharon’s outshining performance made her the lady of the match with good saves, blocks and net game reading.

In the men’s volleyball, Makerere University was at the helm of the game when it outplayed KIU in the game that was very competitive. Later, the game took a surprise twist when KIU picked up and outshined with a 2-1 win. KIU’s Komaketh Innocent was the man of the match.

Makerere University made a comeback in a competitively played men’s basketball to win with a 55-46. It was more of individual skill than tact that won the game with Komakech Ben, leading the attack and Kariuki on the rebounds.

However, the ladies game went to KIU as the MAK ladies’ team lost 28-43. From the start to end KIU showed and exhibited their winning intentions by utilizing all their attacking opportunities with good rebounds both on offensive and defensive. Namukaya Barbara of KIU was the lady of the match with strong drives, high scores, and assists.

Bugema holds Ndejje September 17, 2007

Bugema University snatched a vital point from last year's football kings Ndejje University in a thrilling encounter yesterday at Bugema Grounds.

The visitors took the lead in the 9th minute through Muhindo Tony with a superb half volley before Ibrahim Solo cancelled it in the 15th minute. Richard Odur made light work of a loose ball in the box to make it 2-1 for Ndejje at the hour before man of the match Richard Solo salvaging the home team with a late strike eight minutes from time to tie the game 2-2.

In the ladies volleyball, Ndejje beat Bugema 2-0 at the centre court scoring 25-6 and 25-8 in the first and second set. Nakalema Hafsa (11 points) of Ndejje was man of the match displaying the best serves as Bugema crambled in defeat.

It was the men's volleyball that was the highlight of the day where the Ndejje volleyball team was stunned by Bugema 2-1 recording 19-25, 25-19 and 22-25 in favour of Bugema having brought on their sports tutor who doubles as a student, in the final set to help them win the game

In basketball, it was one way traffic as both Bugema basketball teams lost to Ndejje. Ogutu Paul scored a game high 25 points but was not enough to match his opponents as Bugema lost 52-75 to Ndejje.

In the ladis category, Nalubwama Lyn of Ndejje scored most points to see off Bugema 43-17 in a one sided encounter though man of the match Oriiko Janet of Bugema save more damage on her team by her wonderful display.

Kampala International University hammers Bugema University

Debutants Bugema University’s challenge in the uganda telecom invitational inter-university games got off to a poor start as Kampala International University beat them in all the sports disciplines.

It was total humiliation in basketball as KIU ladies team smashed Bugema 110-06 in the biggest win recorded in ladies basketball since the games begun. Namukaya Barbara of KIU was on song scoring most shorts/points and her performance made her the best player. In the men’s category, KIU’s Mackmot Oron made the most rebounds in the game to earn them a 68-41 win. Bugema never looked like getting back into the game after trailing 24-06 in the first quarter.

In volleyball, KIU continued to dominate in both the ladies and men’s encounters. The ladies rushed the Bugema team 2 sets straight in less than 45 minutes cruising 25-12 in the first set before wrapping it up 25-15 in the second set. Resistance was displayed by Bugema’s volleyball men’s team losing by 5 points in the first set 25-20, though it was just a matter of time before KIU sealed the second set 25-19 in 1 hour 12 minutes.

Segirinya Saidi scored in each half to complete a clean sweep of all games for KIU securing a 2-0 final score in football. Saidi, headed in the far right corner in the 16th minute after 2 Bugema defenders failed to head away a begging cross from the left frank.
In the second half, a neat finish was ensured after good combination from KIU midfield anchor Otai David (man of the match), who played Saidi clean through to slot home. The football game was played at Villa Park.

Games resume again on Tuesday, 18 September, 2007 when Bugeme University hosts Ndejje University.

The UTL games took a sway last weekend when Makerere University Business School hosted Kyambogo University in their return leg of the games. Kyambogo University outplayed MUBS in both Men and ladies basketball. However, MUBS outshined Kyambogo University in both volleyball men and women.

The two Universities made a draw in football where they both each others net with 2 goals. MUBS’s first goal was scored by Brian ….whose outstanding performance gained him the man of the match title. However, MUBS happiness could be outlived as Kyambogo later scored an equalizer towards the end of the 1st half. MUBS took a lead in the second half in gear, when they scored their 2nd goal. However, this was still not long leaved as Kyambogo set in an equalizer that ended the match with 2-2 draw.

Meanwhile, Makerere University (MAK) hosted Ndejje University on the same date. In what seemed to be a highly competitive volleyball game, the Ndejje University out thrashed MAK to take a lead in the men’s volleyball match. The Christian based university further punished MAK when they outplayed them in the volleyball ladies’ game.

However, MAK woke up in the basketball game when they smashed Ndejje University in both the men’s and ladies’ match. MAK showed their expertise at the game when they outplayed their opponents in the ladies basketball game.

The football game was however postponed citing differences by the referees and the universities.

Football clash between Makerere and Ndejje postponed

The football encounter between Makerere and Ndejje Universities on Saturday, September 15 was postponed due to the visitors’ (Ndejje) failure to make it to the venue on time.

According to the rules and regulations, any team that arrives forty five minutes after the scheduled time either loses points or works out a way forward depending on the circumstances of their delay.

According to Mr. Muhumuza Wilfred, Sports Tutor Ndejje, the failure to make it to the venue on time was caused by a puncture they suffered on the vehicle they were traveling in coupled by a heavy downpour that could not allow them make any quick repairs until it subsided.

Makerere and Ndejje universities were slated to start their football match at 10:00am.

On their arrival, the football officials argued that it would be contravening the rules and regulation if the match was played. To add insult to injury, the heavy downpour on Saturday could not allow an immediate recourse.

The football officials however advised that Makerere and Ndejje work out a way forward to either have their match postponed or award points to the hosts (Makerere University). Both parties resolved to have the match rescheduled to a later date.

“Although we have rules to follow, we have resolved to postpone the game to a later date which will be communicated later,” said Mr. Francis Nsimbi, TES Technical Advisor.

This confusion did not affect the other games to take place.

Ndejje's Tom Bukenya was shown marching orders in the fourth quarter after accumulating 5 fouls. However, the officials had to stop the game 10 seconds to the end time due to a brawl involving both teams after Ndejje had contested a tough umpire decision.

The teams later shared points in football after a stalemate in an interesting game watched by a big crowd thanks to KIU skipper/keeper Kalanzi Hamza who saved a penalty 20 minutes from the final whistle.

In the next encounter, Saturday 15/09/07, all roads lead to MUBS where Makerere University will battle it out with Ndejje University while MUBS meets Kyambogo University in their second encounter. Games kick off at 10:00AM. Be there!

MUBS to take on Kyambogo University

Tomorrow all roads lead to Makerere University Business School (MUBS), where it will be hosting Kyambogo University and games start at 10.00am.

MUBS crashed Kyambogo University in their first encounter giving its side wins in both Football and Volleyball losing out to Kyambogo in Basketball.

What will happen this time? Will Kyambogo strike back? These are some of the questions that will be answered after tomorrow’s games.

Meanwhile Makerere University will battle it out with Ndejje University later in the afternoon on MUBS grounds in their first encounter.

Makerere University Business School crush Kyambogo University

Makerere University Business School (MUBS) started strongly in this year's university games by recording victories in football and volleyball to edge Kyambogo University who only managed wins in basketball in Pool B.

The games kicked off at a high note with the Kyambogo ladies basketball team white washing MUBS by 54 baskets to14in the opening game at Kyambogo grounds.

Kyambogo's splendid performance was inspired by Nalika Emily who made the most passes as well as the most rebounds making her the best player of the day as voted for by the officials.

In the other encounter, the MUBS basketball team who took an early lead in the first quarter (16-6) later crumbled in the last two quarters to surrender their lead 15 - 10 and 15- 05 respectively going on to loose the match to Kyambogo men 46 - 39 after the home crowd rallied continuous support to tire the away team. Man of the match Atuhairwe Richard made the crucial points to see off MUBS.

In the other games played MUBS made no mistake by outplaying Kyambogo in football, having a goal disallowed in the first 15 minutes, but went on to take the lead through Oryek Allan in the 37th minute. Lutwama Moses who manned MUBS defence played a game of his life to deny Kyambogo strikers any chance to bother the MUBS keeper which earned him man of the match especially in the dying minutes of the second half.

MUBS then wrapped up the day with a 2-1 set victory in both the ladies and men volleyball. The home side could not match up the MUBS teams after good attacking and spike displays by Nalinya Farida of MUBS who scored the most points (10) and work horse Nicholas Ndyeyongera who collected 12 points and all earned man of the match for the MUBS volleyball team.

Games resume on 11th September where Ndejje University is hosting Kampala International University of pool A.

Games kick-off tommorow

The Uganda Telecom Invitational Inter-University Games will kick off on Friday September 7 at 2:00pm at Kyambogo University.

Kyambogo University will host Makerere University Business School who are to engage in football, basketball and volleyball.

This will be the second year of the event, which will bring together participants from Makerere University, Kampala University, Kampala International University, Bugema University, Mukono Christian University and Ndejje University besides Kyambogo and MUBS.

These universities will be competing for a top prize worth 20 million Uganda shillings.The games are being played under federation rules and managed by Total Events Solutions.

Meanwhile, Uganda Telecom has offered Uganda shillings 500,000 worth of sports
equipment to each participating university so as to enhance the continuity of sports in their institutions.

Jerseys finally delivered

The long awaited uniforms for the various disciplines of the Uganda telecom Inter-University Invitational Games were finally delivered at the TES offices forsports tutors to collect.

Their delivery brings a relief and fulfills a commitment by Uganda telecom to provide jerseys to every university taking part before the tournment kicks off -- Friday September 7, 2007.

On receiving his portion, the UCU Sports Director, Jason, commended the quality of the new jersey and said they were far better than what they received last year.

The comment from Jason is an indication that things are slated to improve each year.

The new uniformshave a very visible Uganda telecom logo and each university would receive their portion following the colours they chose.
